Rond et Carré (pronounced [ʀɔ̃ e kɑʀe]) is a geometric sans-serif typeface built to fully support the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The IPA is a standardized system used to describe every sound used in human speech. Since IPA is designed to break down every language to their base sounds for transcription by language scholars, students, linguists, actors, singers, speech pathologists, conlang creators, and translators, I found it appropriate to design a typeface made from the basic shapes of circles ("rond", pronounced [ʀɔ̃], is French for "circular") and squares ("carré", pronounced [kɑʀe], is French for "square"). Circles form the bowls of the letters with squares forming the counters and providing the logic for breaking these core elements when necessary. Rond et Carré's intended uses coincide with the standard usage of IPA, which ranges from scholarly transcription to theatrical preparation.
