Instead of breaking out pen and paper for Inktober, in 2019 I challenged myself to integrate vector images into photographs. For an added twist, each of the compositions is based on a four letter word unrelated to the others, meaning the only connective tissue between the pieces is the medium. The resulting project was dubbed "Vectober".
The emphasis of Vectober is on character design, rather than environmental illustration. The settings in which the characters find themselves in are all photographs provided by photographers on Unsplash. Without full creative control over the environmental aspects of each composition, the key strategy to finding a successful outcome in each attempt was connecting to the existing colors and forms within each photograph. For example, the oranges and yellows I used for the cats in "Cozy" work because of the hues in the wood and bricks in the photograph.
